Videos that were shot by your smartphones can be crafted into professional films if you know the tips and tricks of video editing. With video editing apps like imovie and FilmoraGo, clips can be stringed together to form a short movie of their own.

These apps allow you to edit your videos ON-THE-GO and it is as easy as filming your own videos with your smartphones. Here are a few tips to make a professional film with these editing apps!

1. Transitions

Transitions between clips are essential for professional film as it brings out a continuity in the video.

As videos and pictures taken from different smartphones, dimensions of the videos may vary. That is why, it is important to ensure that you have your videos and pictures cropped to the same size, so that it flows.

As you have your materials the same size now, you can add in the transition effects that are available in your app. Transition effects can create a better flow of the different scenes as it creates a continuity.

Take it to the next level with these transition effects instead of stringing a bunch of videos together, even from videos to pictures!

2. Audio/Music

Music is an important aspect of a film that we should not take lightly of. From the rustling of the leaves to the voices of people, the audio will determine the emotion of the film that you are delivering.

With the emotion in mind, you can choose the type of background music to put in the video. If you want to add more than 1 soundtrack, it is best to add in an audio effect, like the "Fade out, Fade in" effect. This will ensure a smooth flow in audio transition.

*Take note: Do not let an audio clip end before fading in to the next clip.*

3. Colour adjustment

Not all videos are taken with great lighting. To have a better visual, it is always good to have the habit of adjusting the colours of your videos/pictures.

The video editing apps out there has the function for you to adjust the tone of your clips through "Match Colour", "White Balance", and "Skin Tone Balance". This would enhance the visual, giving it better colours and a video that is more well balanced.

4. Texts/Subtitles

There are times when texts are essential in a video. (e.g Titles, subtitles)

Lucky enough, these video editing apps have this function!

It would be good to have subtitles, so that even if people are watching your videos at places that are noisy, they can read the subtitles.

You just have to select a font in the app and start typing! However, you'll have to take note of the font type and size throughout your videos. Consistency must be kept throughout the video unless you want to put emphasis onto some specific words.

5. Speed up/Slow-motion effects

Videos like the time-lapse can be sped up to create a time-passing effect. The control of the video's speed can give different effects to a film.

With this effect, you can play with the outcome of that clip if you add a soundtrack that keeps to the pace of the video.

So, now you have these few tricks up your sleeves, it is time to download a video editing app and bring your videos to the next level! For a start, you can try "imovie" for iphone users and "FilmoraGo" for android users.
